The experiment aims at the development of matrices of electrodes implemented on ultra-thin polymide, integrated with motor-drive depth electrodes, for the simultaneous recording (and stimulation) from the surface and depth of the cortex.
Such achievement is relevant both for basic science, in that it would open a window on a mesoscopic scale into the brain activity, finer and better (for signal-to-noise ratio) than what is currently under development by other groups (nothing of this kind is commercially available yet; and for application, because of the increasing interest of distributed, direct electrical stimulation of the brain to promote recovery from stroke. |
