MI: STUDIES OF TOTAL, ORGANIC AND INORGANIC IODINE SPECIES BY INSTRUMENTAL AND PRECONCENTRATION NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS WITH COMPTON SUPPRESSION SPECTROMETRY

Iodine is known to be an essential trace element for humans since 19th century. Deficiency of iodine can lead to goitre disease. The recommended average daily dietary intakes of iodine around the world vary from 150 to 200 micrograms per day. Excessive iodine intake can induce hypothyroidism and may contribute to autoimmune thyroid disease. Over the years we have developed several neutron activation analysis (NAA) methods for the determination of low levels of iodine and its species in foods and diets with high precision and accuracy. These include conventional instrumental NAA (INAA), epithermal INAA (EINAA), preconcentration NAA (PNAA), and radiochemical NAA (RNAA) by conventional and Compton suppression gamma-ray spectrometry.
