LNGS: O. FRASCIELLO - THE NEW INFN-CSN5 EXPERIMENT PROPOSAL SIDERALIS
LABORATORI NAZIONALI DEL GRAN SASSO
Astroparticle physics experiments face the challenge of measuring very rare events of the order of few events per year, for which reason they are usually hosted in deep underground laboratories. Experimental data, in such conditions, are affected by background neutrons, as is the case of WIMP or 0vββ experiments, whose signals may be strongly sensitive to their elastic or inelastic scattering, respectively. The SIDERALIS (cosmic SIlence in Deep underground Environments for RAdiation and LIfe Studies) experiment does propose the development of an innovative compact (~3x2x1.5 m3) Multi Cylinder Neutron Detector (MCND), based on BF3 proportional counters, able to perform accurate measurements of background neutron spectra in underground laboratories. γ dosimetry and spectroscopy, together with 222Rn activity concentration monitoring will also allow to gain precious information on several fundamental parameters. As a complement to this challenging task, the radiobiological in-vivo studies on the living organism Drosophila Melanogaster will be carried out in the upgraded PULEX facility at LNGS. The whole experiment will have as an effect also the neutron background characterization of LNGS halls and bypasses. ------------------------------------------- Oscar Frasciello INFN - Laboratory Nazionali di Frascati Radiation Protection Group
