SEZIONE DI ROMA I The search for the lepton flavor violating decay $\mu \to e \gamma$ plays a prominent role in the quest for new physics beyond the Standard Model. In the next decade muon beams with intensities one or two orders of magnitude larger than the present ones could be available, opening new prospects for the search of rare muon decays. The experimental limiting factors which will determine the sensitivity of future experiments searching for $\mu \to e \gamma$ will be discussed. Some conceptual detector design will be also presented, along with an evaluation of the corresponding expected sensitivity.
