LNGS: T. EMKEN - DETECTING LOW-MASS DARK MATTER AFTER SCATTERINGS IN THE EARTH AND SUN
LABORATORI NAZIONALI DEL GRAN SASSO
Direct detection experiments are looking for rare interactions between dark matter (DM) particles from the galactic halo and atoms of a detector. For larger cross sections, such scatterings can occur even before the DM particle enters the laboratory. I will discuss the phenomenological implications of “pre-detection” scatterings inside the Earth and Sun, and how they can both extend and reduce the sensitivity of terrestrial DM searches. --- Timon Emken Department of Physics Chalmers University of Technology
