Encouraging results from the Catana project

Full success in Catania for the first experiments in hadrotherapy for the cure of certain forms of cancer in the ocular region. Hadrotherapy is a new therapeutic advance, developed in the most modern nuclear physics labs in order to fight certain forms of cancer much more effectively than was possible with the traditional radiotherapy. The experiments that are now being carried out in Catania are the result of an intense cooperation between the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (Infn), the Departments of Physics and Astronomy, the Institutes of Ophthalmology and Radiology of the University of Catania and the Sicilian centre for Nuclear Physics and the Structure of Matter. Thanks to this synergy, the Infn superconducting cyclotrone, situated at the Laboratories of the South in Catania, the only functioning structure in Italy able to produce protons with an energy particularly well suited to the cure of tumours in the ocular region. The launch of these clinical applications in Catania make Italy one of the few countries in the world able to use hadrotherapy in the fight against tumours. The results of the experiments will be illustrated on Monday, April 8th, at 11:00 a.m., in the premises of the Palazzo Centrale of the University of Catania. The rector Ferdinando Latteri will be present, as well as the President of Infn Enzo Iarocci, the director of the National Laboratories of the South Emilio Migneco, the project’s scientific spokesperson Salvatore Lo Nigro and the director of the Oculistic Clinic of the University, Alfredo Reibaldi.
