Soon it will be possible to dialogue with Infn researchers and ask them questions on the activities of the Gran Sasso Laboratories

On Saturday, October 5th, following a decree of the attorney’s office of Teramo, the parts of the Borexino experiment containing pseudocumene oil (1,2,4 trimethylbenzene) were sealed. This measure was taken in order to investigate the reasons for the leakage that determined a spill of less than 50 litres of pseudocumene from the Borexino apparatus on August 16th. The substance spilled into a water drainage well from which it reached the Mavone torrent. Pseudocumene is normally used as a component of paints, for example, or as an additive in gasoline. In the Gran Sasso laboratories, on the other hand, it was used for its capacity of revealing the passage of neutrinos: particles that concern many research projects in physics around the world.

Even before the decree from the Teramo attorney’s office, the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (Infn) itself had made sure all the Gran Sasso activities involving the manipulation of pseudocumene were interrupted. This disposition was adopted immediately after the spill on August 16th. At the same time, the Institute named an international committee of experts to investigate on the leakage and to test every safety system in the Laboratory.
The attorney’s decree does not influence those research activities that do not imply the use of pseudocumene, since the law-decree states that “it is imperative that the legitimate desire to guarantee the normal prosecution of those scientific activities inside the National Laboratories that do not prejudice the development of the investigations is safeguarded”.
The magistrate placed the objects under ascertainment, which remain inside the Laboratories, under custody of the Borexino group expert in charge of the safety and environment sections.
The National Institute for Nuclear Physics places complete confidence in the magistrate’s work. Of course, the Institute is at the magistrate’s complete disposal for any need he may have concerning the enquiry. Furthermore, the Institute will put the utmost care into communication with the public. A web page will be accessible from the Laboratories’ homepage (http://www.lngs.infn.it) in order to answer any question the public may care to ask about the Gran Sasso Laboratories. This web site will enable anyone who wishes to ask a question concerning the laboratories’ activities to contact researchers. The service will become active in less than a week’s time.
