The Infn’s initiatives for accident prevention at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories

The Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (Infn) has suspended any activity entailing the manipulation of potentially hazardous substances at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories, following the discovery, announced on September 9th, of traces of pseudocumene oil. The activities of the Borexino experimental apparatus had already been blocked since August 16th, immediately following the occurrence of a leakage of about 50 litres of pseudocumene oil. In August, Infn also named an international committee of experts in order to revise the security systems. This was aimed at preventing accidents from happening in the future. Pseudocumene (1,2,4 trimethylbenzene) is a substance used to reveal the passage of neutrinos. It is employed in the Borexino apparatus, currently under construction, because this instrument will be dedicated to the study of neutrinos produced inside the Sun. The August 16th leakage was due to the chance occurrence of a series of human errors, but the security systems located the spill effectively and the quantity of oil that escaped was limited. Infn is extremely active in its collaboration with the regional and local authorities in order to clear all aspects connected with what happened on August 16th and define strategies for future action.
