  29-09-2005: PHYSICS BY BOAT
 COMPLETE LIST
Adriatica
Adriatica

With Infn, Adriatica sails to the discovery of the science that is useful to go by sea. The first stage will be Trieste

Its name is Adriatica and it is the marvellous sailing-ship of 22 meters, famous thanks to the television programme “Velisti per caso” by Syusy Blady and Patrizio Roversi. For more than a month, as from the 3rd October, the boat will become an original laboratory dedicated most of all to the students. The initiative, named “Physics by boat”, and organized by the Italian Institute for Nuclear Physics is a journey to the discovery of the so many scientific aspects that are hidden behind an amusing excursion by sailing boat: from the most ancient aspects, such as the Archimede principle to the more current ones, such as the necessity to correct the data of the global positioning sytem (Gps), using Einstein’s theory of relativity.

The initiative “Physics by boat” will be inaugurated the 3rd October in Trieste with the participation of Patrizio Roversi. From here, Adriatica will leave for a circumnavigation of our country and it will dock to the ports of Marina di Ravenna, Bari, Catania, Napoli, Roma, Livorno and, finally, to Genova, where it will participate in the initiatives of the Science Festival, as from the 1st of November.

For every stage, if weather permits, short excursions by boat will be organized, during which some students, followed by a teacher and a physicist (besides the crew), will have the opportunity to do experiments related to navigation. Classical themes will be treated, the ones which generations of sailors had to faced since the light of navigation, such as the strategies to orientate oneself in the sea, the functioning of currents, or what is responsible of floating. But the boat will offer also precious hints to discuss the great questions of modern physics. The analysis of phenomena as sea waves interference, for example, will offer the opportunity to understand the functioning of the giant interferometers as Virgo, which will catch the fleeing gravitational waves. It will be also possible to understand how satellite navigators are functioning and why it is necessary to use the relativity theory to get the best precision about positioning.

Once the crew will have landed, also other activities such as conferences or laboratory activities will be carried out. During the transfers from one stage to another, it is foreseen the presence of little groups of students who will carry out little experiments and observations.

“Physics by boat” is one of the initiatives organized by Infn in occasion of the year 2005, international year of physics, to bring girls and boys from schools near physics, by discussing with them about its crucial role to understand phenomena who surrounds us and to face the great challenges of the further years. A sailing boat offers a privileged opportunity to put complex phenomena in light in an original and amusing way and to show the link between peak technologies and the fundamental research”, explains Roberto Petronzio, president of Infn.
