14-09-2006:  RESEARCHER’S NIGHT 2006 IN FRASCATI: PLAYS, DEBATES AND MEETINGS TO STAY UP VERY LATE WITH SCIENCE.
 COMPLETE LIST

The press conference for the launch of the event on Monday, 18th

White night in Frascati, the 22nd of September, but devoted to an amusing and new meeting with the world of research, which is contemporary to similar events in the rest of Europe. European Researchers’night is in fact the name of a European initiative that will take place at the same time in our continent thanks to the efforts of about thirty organizers centres, four of which are Italian. In our country it will be possible playing with science, meeting researchers, participating in debates and conferences and much more, not only in Frascati but also in Piemonte, in Neaples and in four towns in Puglia.

As you can read on European Community website “If you thought that research was all about lab coats and Bunsen burners, think again”. The Lazio event will be presented during a press conference that will take place on Monday, 18th at 11:30 at the Lazio Region, Aninene Hall, 212 Cristoforo Colombo Street.

In the area of the Roman Castles, there is one of the most important scientific poles in Italy and in the world. Research centres of international prestige and of different matters rise in the area from Tor Vergata to Monteporzio Catone: from the world of quarks and of elementary particles of the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics, to the astronomical research of Monteporzio Catone Observatory, from the space and satellite missions coordinated by the European Space Agency up to the Enea environment and alternative energies researches. On occasion of European researchers’s night the National laboratories of Frascati will be opened to the general public, while the Astronomical Observatory researchers will lead the public to the discovery of the sky and it will be possible to visit the Esa and Enea seats. In particular, the European researchers’s night of Frascati will begin from 16:30 up to two p.m. Among different events there will be a round table titled “ Fundamental research as closeness instrument for nations” coordinated by the journalist Giuliano Giubilei. Furthermore there will be concerts, contemporary arts exhibitions with scientific subject and new short films.

“The round table organized in the Laboratories of Frascati will be an occasion to discuss the role of researchers and research within our society” explains Sergio Bertolucci, vice-president of Infn, the primary centre in the organization of the researchers’s night in Frascati and he adds “it will be underlined that science is not only a means of essential development, but also an extraordinary instrument of democracy and peace. Scientists tend normally to talk to each other, ignoring their respective geographical or social differences. Besides, the frontier research can be faced today only by large international collaborations in which scientists know each other and learn how to overcome the mutual mistrust. People coming from countries, which are to each other hostile, have been always working together without problems”.
“A lot of children and students are expected to visit the labs, because they are their future. By seeing the instruments that we use and people who have invented them, we wish they can intuit how fascinating is moving to the bound of knowledge to explore new territories”, says Mario Calvetti, director of the National Laboratories of Frascati.

“Research must be supported and must become a popular argument. For this reason we immediately joined the initiative of the European Union for the researchers’s night that involves more than 30 locations in our continent. I do not know how many citizens in our region know that in Frascati there is one of the frontier centre in the fundamental research. Neutrinos have become famous in these days for the experiment that took place in the bowels of Gran Sasso. It is an import signal that the media gave large space to this event. Frascati is an excellence seat. Here, some of the most important researches at a planetary level and in partnership with centres located in each continent are fulfilled. Researchers’s night is in conclusion an opportunity for a general cultural enrichment of our region, not a far event linked only to the research world. I whish that citizen participate in this party, that is made of communication, knowledge, but also of fun. I wish besides that this appointment becomes for the citizens a new occasion to stay together and to share the engagement of researchers, who can find in sensitization of the public a strong allied in order to gain a major consideration also from national governments”, says Giulia Rodano, Region Lazio culture councillor.

Researchers’night arises not only to respond to people who are fond of scientific communication, those who follows science through magazines and television: the initiative is part of a wide strategy, that it is conceived to increase interest and support towards science in our continent. As you can read on the event webpage in fact, although research plays an ever crucial role for the progress of the modern societies, the number of people attracted by the scientific professions has not increased in proportion: this is a paradox that becomes a true threat for our future. “Researchers are in any scientific field creators and innovators. Their ideas are the engines that allow the economics wheels to goes on” it is also declared on the European Community website. And the 22 September night will be for researchers and public a unique occasion to meet each other to dialogue, to interact and to have fun together with science.

“This night will be for researchers different in comparison with the ones they are used to spend following their experiments. This time the night will be spent to share with the general public the most fascinating aspects of the scientific work. On the other hand, communicating our activity to the non experts is an aim that Infn pursues constantly and with a lot of activities”, says Roberto Petronzio, Infn president.
