The encounters will be broadcasted in streaming on Il Portale della Ricerca Italiana
What is energy, which are the laws of quantum mechanics and how does the fundamental research in physics find application in the enterprise world? These are some of the questions that will be faced during the VI edition of Meetings on Physics, the traditional appointment that gathers round every year researchers, teachers and journalists in the Infn National Laboratories of Frascati, and that will take place from 4th to 6th October. During this edition different arguments will be handled: human evolution, faced by the geneticist Luca Cavalli Sforza, science in the Arabic-Islamic culture introduced by the orientalist Alberto Ventura and the secrets of science in cooking, revealed by the molecular gastronomer Davide Cassi. But these are not the only novelties: for the first time the event will be totally filmed and broadcasted and it will be possible to follow it in streaming on the Portale Nazionale della Ricerca Italiana website (www.ricercaitaliana.it) and on Ricerca & Didattica webpage (www.ricercaedidattica.it).
Meetings on Physics is an event conceived to allow a meeting occasion between researchers and high-school teachers. Nevertheless, it is also opened to journalists. From habit, the agenda of the three days is focused on modern particles and nuclear physics topics, but it does not forget scientific and cultural themes, introduced by experts of other topics. During Meetings Nicola Cabibbo will tell us what is energy, while Roberto Battiston will lead the public to the discovery of the quanta laws: they allow not only to explain phenomena as nature of light, but they also make you understand the functioning of everyday objects as radio waves, laser and x rays. Ubaldo Bottigli will talk about the applications that some Infn researches find in fields apparently far from physics. One will talk also about Cngs, the beam of neutrinos from Cern to Gran Sasso recently inaugurated. The geneticist Luca Cavalli Sforza will talk, the last day, about human evolution according multidisciplinary approaches. The islamist Alberto Ventura will take a speech titled “Islam and scientific thought”. Giovanni Anzidei, vice-president of Scientific Italian Journalists Union, will discuss in the end the importance of dialogue between science and society.
For the first time you can follow Meetings on Physics via web this year, thanks to a collaboration with Il Portale della Ricerca Italiana, that will settle it on its website and with the Cineca multimedia service. Il Portale della Ricerca Italiana (www.ricercaitaliana.it) was born in December 2005, as a project of the Ministry of University and Research, of Universities and research centres. Its aim is being for citizens a window on research world in Italy. It is therefore an instrument to be acquainted with the researches realized in our country, directly from the voice of the protagonists, arriving so, through no mediation, straight up into laboratories. Strict contents and a simple language, the Portale della Ricerca Italiana aims at giving a unique access to the complex “Research System” and at being a unique datum point in the strategies communication and a link for the education systems and for the firms.
For these characteristics, the portale is a communication instrument available for universities, researches centres, and local administrations, firms and so for the country. The portale strengthens the image of the Italian research in Italy and abroad and it expresses therefore the value and plurality of voices it is formed of.
