A new window on the early universe is about to open outside of Rome, Italy.
In its today meeting of the Board of Directors INFN (the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics) has re-established the importance of a possible Super Flavor Factory ("SuperB Project") approving unanimously to move towards the SuperB TDR phase.
The SuperB project will be complementary to the LHC program enabling to elucidate the New Physics properties beyond the Standard Model. The SuperB e_ e+ asymmetric collider, as it is called because of its intensive production of heavy particles named B mesons, could be built on the campus of Roma Tor Vergata University, near the INFN National Laboratories of Frascati.
Very rare events in the decay of elementary particles provide a window to the very high energies that occurred at early times in the development of our universe.
They may very well provide the answer to a major mystery:"Why is our universe now composed entirely of matter, when matter and antimatter were produced in equal
amounts in the Big Bang?"
At SuperB, we will be able to see matter and antimatter coexisting in a state that last occurred in the first moments of the universe some 13.7 billion years ago. We do this by applying one of the rules of quantum mechanics, the Uncertainty Principle.
This alternative approach to the extremely high energy processes, can in fact provide unique and important opportunities for discovery.
It has been recognized that the feasibility of SuperB with a peak luminosity higher than 1036 cm-2 s-1 is based on the novel "crab-waist" scheme. This previously known technique has been adapted to the bunch collision in particles accelerators. The superbe results of the “CrabWaist” test made in Frascati National Laboratory with the modified DA_NE collider has proven that the concept is working properly and has motivated the INFN decision.
The Board of Directors of INFN has therefore decided to endorse the "SuperB TDR" as an official INFN project. This is aimed to organize the international effort towards the work necessary to pave the road for the construction of this machine that could happen as early as in 2-3 years from now. An international structure is being formed, with a strong scientific and technical organization.
