Lucia Votano, Director of the National Laboratories of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) in Gran Sasso, has won the 2009 Minerva Prize for her work in scientific research. The prize has also been awarded to nine other women who have distinguished themselves in the fields of entrepreneurship, management, innovation, the fight for gender equality, politics, literature, the promotion of peace and solidarity, and social commitment.
Lucia Votano earned a degree in Physics with honours in 1971 at “La Sapienza” University in Rome and began her scientific career at the INFN National Laboratories in Frascati in 1976. She was promoted to Senior Researcher in 1988 and to Director of Research in 2000. She has participated in important research projects at CERN, the DESY laboratory in Hamburg, and the INFN National Laboratories in Gran Sasso.
The Minerva Prize recognises women who have distinguished themselves in diverse areas of knowledge and who are considered as exemplary in terms of their professional capacity and positive values. The last Minerva Prize was also awarded to a researcher at the INFN, Marcella Diemoz, coordinator of the INFN physicists who participate in the CMS experiment at the LHC accelerator at CERN.
