Four Italians will work on the four largest experiments at the LHC accelerator of CERN in Geneva.
Pierluigi Campana, research director at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare in Frascati, has been appointed international spokesperson for LHCb. He will take office in May 2011, replacing Andrei Golutvin (researcher at ITEP in Moscow and Imperial College, London) and hold the position for three years.
After Fabiola Gianotti (spokesperson for ATLAS), Guido Tonelli (CMS) and Paolo Giubellino (ALICE), this is another acknowledgement of the international value of Italian physicists, trained by one of the most important schools worldwide.
Pierluigi Campana was elected by the experiment’s Collaboration Board which is made up of representatives of 49 institutions from various countries.
Campana was born in Rome in 1957. For a long time he has worked in some of the best research institutes for physics in Italy, including the Laboratori Nazionali in Frascati, conducting research on proton decadence in the MonteBianco tunnel, as well as the MACRO experiment in the INFN Laboratories at Gran Sasso, focusing in particular on the development of particle revealers. Since 1993 he has been working on the KLOE experiment in Frascati using the machine DAFNE, of which he has Technical Manager.
At CERN in Geneva he has been working on the ALEPH experiment with LEP (the particle accelerator which “generated” what is now LHC). He was also national INFN spokesperson of INFN for LHCB from 2005 to 2009.
According to Pieluigi Campana, this is a “magic moment for LHCb which already with the current luminosity is paving the way for new physics, apart from producing more exact measurements of the CP violation (the phenomenon which led to the asymmetry between matter and antimatter)”.
The LHCb experiments concerns the rare decadence processes of mesons B, containing quark b (or beauty) or anti-quark b; large amounts of these particles are produced during high-energy proton collisions of LHC beams.
