RESEARCH EVALUATION
INFN has always been committed to the evaluation and monitoring of its research programmes, both internally and externally, with evaluations carried out by national experts.
Internal evaluation
In 2000, INFN established the Evaluation Working Group ,which in turn consists of five groups (one for each Scientific Committee) that analyse the scientific performance of individual activities in detail.
In addition to the National Scientific Committees, which have the roles of scientific and financial evaluation, as well as verification and evaluation of the results achieved during and at the end of individual projects, there is also the Scientific Technical Board, which hasan advisory role in ex-ante evaluation in the case of projects of particular significance. The National Coordinator of the Evaluation Group attends the annual meeting of the International Evaluation Committee with the Institute’s management.
International evaluation
Since 1997, the Institute has made recourse to an International Evaluation Committee (IEC) consisting of international experts in the fields in which the Institute conducts its research activities and in the economic-production field. This committee prepares an annual report on the quality of research conducted by Infn, in which it also provides recommendations for improving its overall performance.
The following are currently members of the IEC
- Jorgen D’hondt – Presidente
- Maria Jose Garcia Borge
- Luca D’agnese
- Nigel Stuart Lockyer
- Werner Hofmann
- Belen Gavela
- Roberto Torrini
The reports of the international evaluation committee are available on the chair’s website in the documents menu at the link http://www.presid.infn.it/.
National evaluation
The National Agency for the Evaluation of the University System and Research (Anvur) periodically conducts a five-year evaluation of the research quality ofuniversities and research institutions called Vqr. In the last Vqr covering 2015-2019, INFN ranked first among large institutes for research activities and second for third mission activities. The 2020-24 VQR is currently in progress.
