INFN’s work is carried out across the whole country and is based at two types of complementary research facilities: the Divisions, which are situated in university physics departments, and the National Laboratories. There are 20 divisions, which are assisted by 6 associated groups, ensuring a close connection between the Institute and the Universities.
There are 4 National Laboratories, located in Catania, Frascati (Rome), Legnaro (Padua), and Gran Sasso (Assergi, L’Aquila). These large research facilities house and manage the experimental equipment provided to the national and international scientific community. INFN also has 3 specialist National Centres: CNAF (the National Centre for Research and Development on Information and Communication Technologies) in Bologna; TIFPA (the Trento Institute for Fundamental Physics and Applications) in Trento; and GGI (Galileo Galilei Institute for Theoretical Physics) in Florence. The Central Administration, with its office in Frascati, and the President’s Office, located in Rome, are also part of the Institute’s organisational structure. In addition, INFN is involved in international research infrastructure with headquarters in Italy and in national and international consortia.
INFN has four National research Laboratories that host large equipment and infrastructure provided to the national and international scientific community.
INFN is present throughout the nation and has divisions in 17 Italian regions out of 20.
As well as the Laboratories and Divisions, INFN has 3 national centres dedicated to specific themes.
Italy hosts two important pieces of international research infrastructure dedicated to the research into gravitational waves and neutrinos.
The Central Administration is divided into Departments, Professional Services, Services and Offices, in relation to the degree of organisational, operational, and managerial complexity.
The Head office performs teaching and technical-professional support functions in relation to the tasks of the President, Executive Committee, and Management Council.
The Communications Office operates out of the President’s office and collaborates with the President and the Executive Committee in defining INFN’s communication strategy
