INFN participates in consortia, companies, foundations, and, in general, various locally based associations. Overall, the Institute numbers about thirty investments for a financial commitment of more than € 10 million per year. Almost all this funding is concentrated in the grants disbursed to the EGO (European Gravitational Observatory) consortium, which participates in the international network of gravitational wave observers GWIC (Gravitational Wave International Committee), the GARR (Expansion Management Research Network) Consortium Association, and, to a lesser degree, the RFX consortium, in the sector of nuclear fusion. To find out more on the topic, please go to the page dedicated to the consortia.
In the field of IT networks, the contribution of INFN to the GARR (Expansion Management Research Network) Consortium Association is also significant. Moreover, since 2022, INFN has been one of the founding members of the National Centre in High Performance Computing, Big data and Quantum Computing (ICSC), one of the five National Centres funded as part of the Education and Research Mission of the PNRR coordinated by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR).
INFN is involved in multiple foundations; the most important include: the Bruno Kessler Foundation, the Ettore Majorana Foundation, and the CNAO Foundation. In addition, during 2021, the Institute also approved its participation in two ITS (Higher Technical Institutes) Academies: the Istituto Superiore Meccatronico del Lazio and the Istituto Tecnico Superiore Meccanica, Meccatronica, Motoristica, Packaging – ITS Maker in Bologna.
Since June 2022, and in relation to the projects using PNRR funds INFN has formalised its membership of 7 new, private law foundations and 2 consortium companies, all with the role of HUB or parties implementing various projects: National Research Centre of High Performance Computing, Big Data and Quantum Computing (Bologna), Rome Technopole (Rome), Ecosister (Bologna), Samothrace (Catania), Fair (Pisa), Dare (Bologna), and Anthem (Milan).
In recent years, INFN increased its membership in various international, national, and regional associations (for more information, consult the three-year plan).
